Improve placement
Place the router centrally, elevated, and away from thick walls, metal objects, microwaves, and large appliances.
Choose the right band
- 2.4 GHz reaches farther but is usually slower and more congested.
- 5 GHz is faster at shorter range.
- 6 GHz offers clean spectrum on compatible Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices but has shorter reach.
Test systematically
Compare wired and wireless speed near the router, update firmware, pause heavy downloads, and inspect connected devices before buying new equipment.
Client capability sets the ceiling
How to Improve Slow Wi-Fi depends on both sides of the radio link. A newer router cannot give an older client Wi‑Fi 6, additional antennas or 6 GHz support. Distance, obstacles, channel use and neighbouring networks can reduce results well below theoretical link rates.
Measure the effect
Use the same capable client and test close to the router before moving to the problem location. Note the band and negotiated connection. Compare latency as well as throughput, and test Ethernet to separate wireless effects from the ISP and WAN path.
Final verification step
Test one known-good client because different devices can have very different antennas and radio generations. If only one device is slow in the same location, update or troubleshoot that client before redesigning the whole Wi‑Fi network.
