First checks
- Move the same client close to the router to establish whether the radio works normally.
- Place the router open and elevated, away from metal cabinets and large appliances.
- Compare 2.4 GHz coverage with the faster but shorter-range higher bands.
How to interpret the result
Strong performance near the router but weak performance in one area indicates a coverage path problem, not necessarily a slow ISP. Thick walls, floors and long corridors can justify a wired access point or carefully positioned mesh node. Full bars beside a mesh point do not prove that the point has good backhaul.
What this symptom usually does not prove
Do not place an extender or mesh node entirely inside the dead zone; it needs a reliable upstream signal.
Escalate with useful evidence
Record which devices are affected, whether Ethernet and Wi‑Fi behave differently, the router or gateway status, and the exact time of the fault. This evidence helps distinguish a local client issue, radio problem, routing policy, upstream service fault or failing hardware.
Before a factory reset
Restart the relevant device first and save any ISP, Wi‑Fi, reservation, port-forwarding or mesh information needed to rebuild the network. A factory reset is a configuration-recovery action, not a universal diagnostic test.
