Channel advice depends on the band
On 2.4 GHz, overlapping channels and neighbouring networks make 20 MHz operation a reliable baseline. On 5 GHz, wider channels can improve peak throughput but consume more spectrum and may encounter DFS restrictions. On 6 GHz, compatible Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 clients and regional rules are required.
How to validate a change
Record latency, throughput and stability from the same location before changing a channel. Test for long enough to catch intermittent interference. Automatic selection can outperform a fixed channel when the local environment changes throughout the day.
A channel change will not fix a slow ISP connection, weak mesh backhaul or an underpowered client radio.
Final verification step
Recheck the environment after major household changes or when neighbours install new networks. A channel that was quiet months ago may no longer be the best choice, and automatic selection may be preferable in a changing environment.
