First checks
- Compare Ethernet and Wi‑Fi at the same evening time.
- Check household uploads, cloud backups, streaming and game downloads.
- Repeat the test close to the router and on another band.
How to interpret the result
If Ethernet also slows, the ISP or total household demand is more likely than radio interference. If Ethernet remains fast but Wi‑Fi slows, inspect channel congestion and local usage. High upload saturation can increase latency for everyone even when download demand looks modest.
What this symptom usually does not prove
Do not choose a new Wi‑Fi channel based on a daytime scan if the problem occurs only in the evening.
Escalate with useful evidence
Record which devices are affected, whether Ethernet and Wi‑Fi behave differently, the router or gateway status, and the exact time of the fault. This evidence helps distinguish a local client issue, radio problem, routing policy, upstream service fault or failing hardware.
Before a factory reset
Restart the relevant device first and save any ISP, Wi‑Fi, reservation, port-forwarding or mesh information needed to rebuild the network. A factory reset is a configuration-recovery action, not a universal diagnostic test.
